About Steph D. Penn
I’ve been writing stories for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Detroit, in my household writing was one of the first ways I learned how to make sense of the world around me. I loved creating characters, imagining their lives, and telling stories about people who felt real.
Today, I write stories that center resilience, truth, and the complicated lives of women who refuse to be overlooked. My work often explores history, justice, family, friendship, and the moments that shape who we become. I’m especially drawn to stories about women navigating difficult circumstances and finding strength in ways they didn’t expect.
When I’m not writing, I’m building, creating, and working with communities and organizations that believe in the power of connection and impact.

Pressed Powder & Pride
Pressed Powder & Pride was inspired by stories I grew up hearing about women who worked downtown at Hudson’s in Detroit during the 1970s, women who were stylish, independent, and carving out their own space in a changing city. My love for Black-owned brands and the power of representation also shaped this story.
At the center is Enchanté, a cosmetic counter run entirely by Black women for Black women, where Charlotte, Bernice, Diane, Faye, and Rosemarie discover that beauty can also be power. This novel is about friendship, ambition, and pride. If you love stories about sisterhood, history, and women building something of their own, this book is for you.
